When you run a business in the hospitality or tourism industry, it is likely you will be dealing with outdoor areas. Anything from a small courtyard to an expansive poolside resort area can become part of a successful organisation in these industries, but certain precautions need to be taken.

Chief among these is making sure shade structures are in place to protect guests and patrons from ultraviolet rays and other damage, which is often something Queenslanders ignore. For example, Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) noted in a March 30 press release that 37 per cent of young people in the state think they have a low risk of getting skin cancer.

However, we have 370 people in the state being told every day that they have skin cancer. It's important to be aware of these facts, and as a business owner, be responsible with the right commercial and architectural umbrellas in your outdoor areas.

Beware the tan

The CCQ media release also discussed the phenomenon of tanning, with 16 per cent of young Queenslanders viewing a tan as a sign of good health. However, this is not necessarily the case.

"It's concerning that so many young Queenslanders still desire a tan, and think that tanned skin is a sign of health," said Katie Clift, CCQ spokesperson.

"There is nothing healthy about sunbaking – even before the skin changes colour, significant damage can occur, greatly increasing the risk of cancer".

This is important to remember, even if summer is on the way out. Ms Clift also stated that sunburn only takes 15 minutes to occur, and it can happen at any time of year – we aren't called the Sunshine State for nothing.

Seek shade at all times

With this in mind, it's crucial to provide the right shade in a hospitality environment. The CCQ notes that shade that casts a dark shadow is excellent for protecting from UV rays. At Skyspan™, our commercial umbrellas such as the sunset range have the materials to perform this task.

The shade structure membranes are heat reflective, UV-treated and fully welded for excellent sheltering from the sun. Carefully crafted structures with world-class engineering mean that our products don't just look fantastic – they are ideal for all types of industries that need to protect customers in the outdoors.
